2005 Sailing Digest

On
this page, I will detail, to an extent, a sort of daily vessel log,
including brief outings, maintenance, and short sailing
descriptions. This is a way to keep track of my
sailing and maintenance days, in a format that will be easy to maintain
and read. From time to time, as conditions dictate, I will
continue to post more detailed sailing and cruising logs.
All times listed in the
entries are approximate.

July 21, 2005 | More Cruise Loading
On board: 0830-1300
I meant for this to be a quick trip to
bring out some more clothes and food. However, our friend Britton
had arrived the night before on his Triton (Prudence, at least for
now...), and when he rowed by I eventually invited him aboard, and we
ended up chatting for far too long. Once again, the weather
outside was perfect, and I was in no hurry to rush ashore, though I had
plenty I should have been doing. Oh well...apparently I was
entering vacation mode a little early! |
July 20, 2005 | Sail
On board: 1045-1415; 6.9 nm
traveled
A nice sail with my mom. The
wind was very light most of the time, but we found enough to make it
worthwhile. The weather was perfect. |
July 18, 2005 | Load for Cruising
On board: 0630-1300
 The
day was foggy and calm. I met Nathan down at the dinghy at
0630 (launch service begins at 0800), and rowed him out to
Dasein so that he could load his boat early as well. We
both motored into the docks and spent some time carting gear
aboard. |
 Some
bird had left me a nice gift in the cockpit. Thanks! |
 I
loaded most of our clothes, lots of food (nonperishable), cans
of soda, water, and so forth. I also filled the water
tank, filled and stowed the on-deck water jugs, stowed extra
diesel jugs, dinghy parts, and the like. |
 Then,
I spent several hours on the mooring stowing all the new gear
and optimizing (once again) the storage situation. I was
in no rush to return ashore. The boat came down to her
lines with the additional weight of all the extra cruising gear. |

12, 2005 | Sail
On board: 0830-1400; 11.9nm
traveled
A much needed, oft-postponed, excellent
sail. I felt invigorated afterwards; my priorities have been
misaligned this season. |
July 3, 2005 | Sail
On Board: 0900-1500; 13.5nm traveled
It was a glorious, perfect day--no
improvement possible. Clear skies, gentle winds, warm
temperatures, and low humidity. If only it were like this all the
time!
 Heidi
had other things to do, so I went to the boat alone as early as I could,
and relaxed for a while waiting for the wind to come up. The first
hints of a breeze began at 1000, so shortly thereafter I dropped the
mooring and headed out. The wind was light but steady, and built
slightly to around 8-10 knots--very pleasant.
With an outgoing tide, I decided to head
out Hussey Sound, which can be a real pain if the tide is flooding.
Outside the islands, the winds were lighter, but still steady enough,
and I sailed north around Long Island before returning through
action-packed Chandler Cove, a narrow thoroughfare that was teeming with
high-speed powerboats, maximum wakes, fluky winds, and an opposing
tide--NOT pleasant. I prevailed, though, and managed to make it
through under sail. I had a pleasant sail the rest of the way back
to the mooring.
There were tons of boats out; ordinarily,
I would have avoided sailing on the July 4th weekend, but after a very
busy week last, and a lot of foggy/hazy/humid weather with no wind, I
was desperate for a sail--and the weather was just so perfect.
However, I realized once more how fortunate (and spoiled) I was by my
normal mid-week sails, with an empty bay.
